School Resource Officer
School Resource Officer
The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a law enforcement officer assigned to the school to help provide a safe and secure environment for students and staff. While the SRO is available to respond to emergencies and situations requiring law enforcement, the SRO is not a school disciplinarian or enforcer of school rules. Routine matters involving student behavior and school policy are handled by teachers and school administrators.
Just as importantly, the SRO’s role is to build positive, trusting, long-term relationships with students. Through everyday interactions, mentorship, encouragement, and simply being an approachable and trusted adult, the SRO works to ensure students know they have someone they can turn to when they need help. These relationships not only create positive experiences between young people and law enforcement, they also help make our schools safer. Our goal is simple: keep students safe, build relationships, earn their trust, and be there when they need us.
Hello! My name is “Officer JD” Simmons, and I am proud to serve as the School Resource Officer for Morningside Elementary.
I have been a police officer since 1997, serving our community since 2006 and our schools since 2015. Having the opportunity to interact with our students each day, build lasting relationships with them, and work alongside our dedicated teachers and administrators has truly been one of the greatest highlights of my career!
I take tremendous pride in what I do and sincerely appreciate the trust you place in me to help keep your children safe, while making sure they know they always have someone at school they can turn to. Please never hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions, concerns, or if there is ever anything I can do to help.
I look forward to another great year with our Morningside Mustangs!
